Water Conservation

The UN World Water Development Report Says –
“By 2025 it is predicted that large parts of India will join countries or regions having absolute water scarcity.”
This all is threatening! By 2025, nearly 2 billion people will live in absolute water scarcity. We all read news about water scarcity or people fighting for water. But why are we only facing this problem when the other countries getting less water than us do not face any? Have a look at this –
“On one side, Israel receives only 25cm. of annual rainfall while India receives 114cm of rainfall, but then also Israel does not face any water scarcity.”
Why? The answer calls for Water Management in India. Let us read some water management techniques in India –

CONSTRUCTION OF DAMS – Dams were referred as “Temples of India” by Jawaharlal Nehru. They are the multipurpose projects and lifelines of Indian Economy because in addition to the storage of water, dams are also used for irrigation, electricity generation, flood control, recreation, navigation, and fish breeding. For example – The Bhakra Nangal Dam generates very large amount of electricity. The Indira Gandhi Canal has brought greenery to Rajasthan and various other states.

RAINWATER HARVESTING – This is yet popular method used for water conservation. This can be practiced by each that house which can afford an underground tank with filtration facilities. In this, the water that falls on the roofs of the house flows through a pipe into an underground tank where it is filtered and then used for various purposes except drinking.

DRIP IRRIGATION SYSTEM – This method is used in agriculture because a large amount of water is used in agriculture and that calls for water conservation. In this method, instead of large amount of water used directly for irrigation, water is given drop by drop so that it is not wasted.

SPRINKLER SYSTEM – This is another good water conserving system for agriculture. In the rotating sprinkler system, the machine sprinkles water on all the crops all around it and has a wider reach than the human hand. It also reduces the mechanical work.

This was all to be done by the government, now let us come to our responsibilities like –
 Use a mug and bucket instead of a hosepipe for washing your cars.
 Water your plants with the water in which vegetables have been washed.
 Keep a bucket on your terrace while it is raining and use the collected water for small purposes.
 Close any tap that you opened in the public places.
 Do not leave the tap opened while you are brushing your teeth.
But these are not all and only reading these will not do. Go and try these methods as soon as you get a chance. Even the smallest try will do because when small drops are collected they make a mighty ocean.
One more work you should do is that you should inspire other people to conserve water.
“Look, Water, the elixir of life is running out,
Save it before it makes our life run out.”
